shale background

The Element of Earth embodies the never-ending cycle of life, death, and rebirth and is associated with the North, the place of fertility and manifestation. It is the greening of the land and the abundance and biodiversity of our mother, Gaia. Earth gifts us with vitality and virility and is our sexual and animal instinct. It begs us to “seize the day” and act with purpose, desire, and intention; for it is the manifestation of energy into solid form.

The element of Earth is the least mutable of the elements and offers us strength and solidity. We can feel the solid ground beneath our feet and have witnessed the mountains and land supporting and sustaining us for centuries. When we are in need of inner strength, perseverance, and determination, we can look to the Element of Earth.

The Element of Earth also personifies commitment, service, and purpose. It shows us how to serve something greater than ourselves and consciously create. It helps us let go of our self-importance and see ourselves as a tiny part of an immensely diverse, interdependent living whole.

In the Tarot, Earth is represented by the suit of Pentacles. They represent the tangible aspects of life and are concerned with our personal resources, our physical selves, and how we perceive and shape our external world. The symbol of the Pentacle is a magical talisman that has the ability to manifest the dreams, ideas, and goals of the other three elements/suits.

Working with Earth:

Go outside and walk barefoot upon the Earth and feel her grounding energy. After WW2, rubber and plastic began to be used in the manufacturing of our shoes, sneakers, and sandals. We gained comfortable footwear, but also began to insulate ourselves and especially our children from the beneficial grounding effects of our mother Gaia. We encourage you to regularly walk barefoot upon the Earth.

Cultivate a relationship with a place in Nature and its Genius Loci, the protective guardian spirit of the place. Most people recognize the sentient consciousness of animals, some also that of plants; we also hold this to be true for locations, landforms, forests, bodies of water, weather patterns, and all that we experience in this physical realm. The Genius Loci is the atmosphere of the area, the impression it makes and the feel of its energy. This place that you have chosen to connect with has control over its own form and communicates with other beings, including you should you choose.
